Onzy Elam had a distinguished football career that began at Tennessee State University, where he played from 1982 to 1986. Initially redshirted as a strong safety, Elam transitioned to linebacker in 1983 and became a four-year letterman for the Tennessee State Tigers. His performance and leadership on the field earned him a place in the university's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024. Elam was selected in the third round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, where he played for two seasons. He later joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, appearing in one game.
